SHOW DESCRIPTION
This groundbreaking, Obie-winning off-Broadway smash also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation and Broadway revival. In a powerhouse one-night-only concert, “internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Schmidt takes to the stage to smash the fourth wall and rock the house. Hedwig, an East German rock ’n’ roll goddess, happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with an “angry inch.” Hedwig (née Hansel) explains her story in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine, backed by a hard-rocking band called “The Angry Inch.” Through songs and monologues, Hedwig tells her story, which began in the former East Berlin, where she met Luther, an American GI who promised to take her to the States on the condition that she change her genitalia. After the bungled operation, Luther abandons Hedwig in a Kansas trailer park, where she turns to music and meets geeky Tommy Speck, whom she mentors and deeply loves. Tommy steals her songs and achieves rock star fame, casting Hedwig aside. Demanding redress, she has stalked Tommy’s world tour, performing in the shabby venue next to his stadium show. Through head-banging anthems and heartfelt rock ballads, Hedwig describes her life’s search for “The Origin of Love” and a reunion with her other half. It’s a rocking ride – funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who feels life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.
CHARACTERS
HEDWIG/TOMMY GNOSIS – Hedwig is a transgender/genderqueer rock and roll singer from communist East Berlin. While she can come off as arrogant and prickly, at heart, she is a broken person who is looking for acceptance and love. This role requires a strong storyteller who is comfortable balancing humor and heartbreak. Strong rock vocals, high energy, comfort with choreographed movement, and a willingness to take risks are essential.
Vocal range: A2-B4
From the production team: The role of Hedwig includes performing “Wicked Little Town (Reprise)” as Tommy Gnosis, which will involve a more masculine-presenting costume plot. We are deeply committed to creating a rehearsal and performance space where all actors feel safe, supported, and respected in their identities. If you have any concerns around gender presentation (including potential dysphoria), we want to work with you to ensure your comfort and well-being throughout the process.
YITZHAK ** THIS ROLE HAS ALREADY BEEN CAST. WE ARE LOOKING FOR AN UNDERSTUDY ** - Yitzhak is Hedwig’s husband and the back-up singer for her band, The Angry Inch. Previously, Yitzhak was the most famous drag queen in Zagreb; he begged Hedwig to take him with her. Hedwig agreed to marry Yitzhak so he could come to America. This role requires a performer who can convey depth with stillness. Strong vocal ability and emotional nuance are essential.
Vocal range: D4-A5
